Watch North Minneapolis Residents Speak Up at TPT Ch. 17
Show Time: January 26th, 2008 at 9pm on TPT/17
Introduction: "Speak Your Mind" is a 30-min video, designed as a
non-traditional community engagement project, sponsored by Juxtaposition
Arts and Asian Media Access. The project is led by youth and young adults
from both agencies, they went out on the streets of North Minneapolis to
capture the ideas and opinions of the people who live, work and frequent the
neighborhood.
This program is a collage of ideas, stories, and sound bites that paint a
multi-faceted, complex, and at times, conflicting portrait of the Northside.
Please tune in, at 1/26, and write to us about your opinions at
amamedia@amamedia.org, or call at 612-376-7715

3. Building Brainpower BETTER
COMMUNITY ACADEMIC SUMMIT
Minneapolis Public Schools 6th Annual
Date & Time: Saturday, January 26, 2008, 8:30 am -12:00 pm
Location: Minneapolis Community & Technical College, 1415 Hennepin Avenue,
Minneapolis
We work hard to increase students’ brainpower, but are we working smart? It
stands to reason that if students don't learn the way we teach them, then we
must teach them the way they learn. Some people call this "teaching with
the brain in mind" because it reflects methods and principles of learning
that have grown out of the brain research of the last two decades.
This winter's Community Academic Summit sessions are designed so you can
experience instructional strategies that maximize understanding and
remembering and minimize not caring and forgetting. In the sessions, you'll
experience how learning increases for both students and adults when
strategies like drawing to understand, metaphor, music, and storytelling are
used to teach curriculum objectives and meet national standards in math,
language arts, science and more. Ensure that your learners retain key
concepts, not just for tests, but for life!

4. Project Murua: A Pre-Meditated Parenting Boot Camp
Are you a parent who feels as if you are fighting a daily battle to keep
your children away from drugs, gangs, guns and possible death? Do you feel
like you are ill-equipped and losing the battle? Project Murua is a 10-week
intensive parent education and training program designed to reduce violence
in Minneapolis by giving parents the ammunition needed to win this war. You
will receive hands-on guidance and emotional support from the class as you
gain knowledge, responsible parenting strategies and resources to promote
wellness and reduce violence among high-risk youth ages 8-18. The weekly
classes will include guest speakers, assignments and videos. Transportation
assistance is available in order to attend each weekly class. A cash
stipend will be given to all class graduates. Child care is provided. Each
class starts with a light dinner.
Project Murua classes will meet each Thursday until February 21, 2008 from
5:30 - 8 pm at the Harvest Preparatory School, 1300 Olson Memorial Highway.
To enroll in the Project Murua class, contact Dr. BraVada Garrett-Akinsanya
at 612-302-3140.
