Shichen's 'Advice to the Prince' (Shuochu)"
Date & Time: Tuesday, April 15, 11:30 - 12:30
Location: Walter Library 101
The talk is co-sponsored by the Consortium for the Study of Asia and the
Center for Early Modern History. William Rowe is a Professor of Chinese
History and Director of East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
In 1801, a relatively obscure 26-year-old scholar named Bao Shichen wrote a
treatise that proposed fundamental constitutional change in the
administration of the Qing empire. In spite of the fact that Bao
subsequently became widely admired for his policy advice on practical
political and economic reforms, this treatise was not published until over a
century after its writing. The talk will explore in a preliminary way what
might have been so dangerous about this treatise, and how it may have fit
into a wider counter-discourse in Qing political thought.

6. 3rd Annual Hear My Voice
Would your schedule permit you to attend the third annual Hear My Voice!
Are You Listening? Civic Engagement, Public Achievement, Voter registration,
Youth Rally ( non partisan) on April 19th (time 4-7 pm)? The important
event is hosted by the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation and other supporting
organizations and youth groups. They will be featuring a diverse mix of
music, hip hop, gospel, dance, spoken word, local and national celebrities
and several mini Speak N' Reaches with a select few young, bright, emerging
immigrant and native leaders of color under 30 to speak (no more than 2
minutes) during the event.
Date & Time: April 19, 2998, 4 pm 7 pm
Location: Central High School, 275 North Lexington Parkway, St. Paul
The event focuses on the importance of being civically, politically and
publicly engaged. Also Voter registration. Most of the young people of
color attending don't understand the power of their voice to affect change
in their communities, city, state, country and in the world. They hope to
make "change" real for our young people. They need to know that their
efforts won't go unnoticed. They need to see how the decisions that are
made by public officials directly impact their lives (education, jobs,
safety, health, etc). They need to know what avenues they can take to be
involved and/or influence decisions etc. They will also have a panel
discussion during the last hour and will invite these young people to be a
part of that too.
To the Elders, they will close it out with a passing of the baton ceremony
from elders to youth. They would love for you to be involved. Let them
know if you can be there. Come and stand up for our youth and our future.
Your/the Elder Community leaders presence will encourage youth to be
involved, have a voice, vote etc. They need young people to follow in your
foot steps! Your presence will certainly make a huge difference to these
young people. As you would imagine, they are attracting major media this
important election year as well.
