1. East Asia Seminar Series

Japan in Hollywood Now
A Dialogue between Japanese actor Joy Nakagawa and literature professor
Toshifumi Miyawaki

Date & Time: October 22, 2007, 7 p.m.
Location: 101 Walter Library

Japan has been represented in Hollywood movies since the first century of
film history. More than any other mass media and cultural representation,
Hollywood depiction of Japan has been the focus for academic scholars and
film makers alike. The cinematic representation of Japan has also been an
indicative marker reflecting the converging interests from both the cultural
and political perspectives between Japan and the US.

In 2006, Clint Eastwood directed a critically acclaimed while controversial
in terms of the politics of representation film- "Letters from Iwo Jima" in
which Eastwood depicts Japan in a different light. This difference will be
reflected on by Joy Nakagawa, a Hollywood actress, who assisted Eastwood as
a script consultant throughout the shooting of film. Being the
middle-person between Eastwood and an almost all Japanese cast, she was
often called for retakes in place of Eastwood and provided additional
interpreting support. In this way, Nakagawa acted as the mediation between
Hollywood and Japan in their mutual imaginary involving the politics of
representation.

Joy Nakagawa will discuss her role as interpreter for the film and show
photographs taken on site. A dialogue between two mediators of Japanese and
American culture will help us get a closer glimpse of Hollywood through the
lens of a Japanese actor.

Joy Nakagawa has appeared in "Home Sweet Hoboken" (2001) and "Brother"
(2000) directed by Beat Takeshi. She was born in Japan and studied history
in the U.S., Italy, and Greece.

Toshifumi Miyawaki is a professor of Literature at Seikei University in
Tokyo, Japan and is currently a visiting professor in Asian Languages and
Literatures. He specializes on Nobel Literature Prize candidate Murakami
Haruki and F Scott Fitzgerald.

The dialogue will be moderated by Leo Chen from the Cultural Studies and
Comparative Literature Department.

Memories and Media Myths of Iran & North Korea, is a multimedia,
multicultural collaboration of Korean-American and Iranian-American
performing artists exploring personal identity, cultural heritage, and
mainstream sound-bites - through live music, storytelling, acting, dancing,
and photos of North Korea, Iranian artwork, excerpts performed from
autobiographies by Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi and former North
Korean spy Kim Hyun Hee, and also excerpts from the VeryMuchSo Productions
film A State of Mind, about two young North Korean Mass Games gymnasts.

Two Asian cultures and two American artists, their similarities and
differences, artistic, spiritual, political, personal, family and cultural
histories, are offered as an alternative to the mainstream media portrayals
of North Korea and Iran, merely as nuclear time bombs, with outrageous
dictatorships.

With humor, pathos and humanity, this performance will also highlight the
survival of Korean and Iranian people and their cultures despite repeated
occupations, wars, and political crises, as well as the personal experiences
of Karen HeaChung Lyu (Global Jazz) and Maryam Yusefzadeh (Robayat) living
through the challenges of being artists of color, and immigrants in America.

Musicians include: Tim O'Keefe (Global Jazz & Robayat) - Bass, Drums, Oud,
Latin & Persian Percussion, Sound Engineer, Jocko MacNelly (Global Jazz &
Robayat) - Bass, Guitar, Oud, and Craig Hara (Global Jazz) - Drums,
Keyboard. Other artists include Brooke Jee In Newmaster (Chang Mi Korean
Dance and Drum) - Korean Dance Choreographer and Instructor, Hector Roberts
(Triple Espresso) Lighting & Technical Director, Leili Pritschet - Persian
Dance Consultant, Shahnaz Yusefzadeh Coyer - Iranian American artwork,

Mistry (Dreamland Arts) - Theatrical and Logistics Consultant.
