This exhibit will feature work by Chinese and non-Chinese artists who have
visited the Three Gorges site, where the building of the world's largest
hydroelectric dam along the Yangtze River is taking place. The control of
water is a universal story, but this exhibit will portray the drama specific
to this time and this place in China. These photographs will portray what
damming the Yangtze will mean to the environment, to the culture, and to the
people.

Low-income families often miss out on important benefits that are vital to
their economic stability and overall well-being because they are unaware
that they are eligible or face barriers to enrollment.

CDF Minnesotaıs new Bridge to Benefits is an exciting, easy-to-use online
tool that allows service providers and families to determine potential
eligibility for public work support programs. It also helps families
overcome enrollment barriers. Programs include health care, food support,
energy assistance, child care assistance, school meals and tax credits.
Bridge to Benefits grew out of an earlier CDF Minnesota initiative called
Covering All Families. Come find out how Bridge to Benefits can work for
you.

4. Asian Literatures, Cultures and Media Workshop

Asian Literatures, Cultures and Media Workshop

Date & Time: November 13, 2007, 4:15 pm
Location: Folwell 128, East Bank, University of Minnesota

Lecture and Discussion with Professor Toshifumi Miyawaki

*Fireflies in the Dark: Fitzgerald's /Tender Is the Night/ and Haruki
Murakami's /Norwegian Wood/*

Focusing on the firefly scene depicted in the works of Fitzgerald and
Murakami, Professor Miyawaki links the two authors’ works through the
specter of generational loss. Professor Miyawaki finds surprising
resonances between the jazz age as depicted in Fitzgerald's work and
Murakami's portrait of post-1969 Japan in /Norwegian Wood/. He shows the
deep connection between Fitzgerald's /Tender is the Night/ and Murakami's
later novel arguing that the Japanese inherited a similar spirit of a "lost
generation."

Toshifumi Miyawaki is a Professor of Literature at Seikei University in
Tokyo, Japan and is currently a visiting professor in Asian Languages and
Literatures. He specializes on Nobel Literature Prize candidate Haruki
Murakami and F Scott Fitzgerald.
