"Spice and Slice of Asian Culture" Series at Hennepin County Library
Authors, Chefs and Art in Spotlight for Asian Pacific Heritage Month
"Travel" to Asia at free "Spice and Slice of Asian Culture" programs =20
scheduled in May at Hennepin County Library. Enjoy a multicultural =20
experience at five "destination" libraries as local authors, chefs, =20
restaurant owners, and art collectors spotlight the ingredients and =20
traditions central to Chinese, Hmong, Indian, and Vietnamese cultures.
A diversity of Asian ethnic groups call the Twin Cities home, some =20
for several generations, and their numbers are growing. According to =20=
the 2000 U.S. Census, about 172,000 Asian Americans and Pacific =20
Islanders live in Minnesota, a population that nearly doubled between =20=
1990 and
2000. The largest group is Hmong; about 78% are under age 40. Their =20=
diverse cultures include a diversity of languages as well - Asian =20
Americans and Pacific Islanders speak more than 100 languages and =20
dialects.

4. Movie Screening: Sentenced Home
Raised as Americans in inner-city projects near Seattle, three young =20
Cambodian refugees each made a rash decision as a teenager that =20
irrevocably shaped their destiny. Now facing deportation back to =20
Cambodia years later, they find themselves caught between a tragic =20
past and an uncertain future by a system that doesn't offer any =20
second chances.
This movie will be screened on Thursday, May 10 from 6 to 8 PM at the =20=
Neighborhood House, 179 Robie Street East, St. Paul, MN 55107.
This event is FREE & Open to the Public, with a panel discussion to =20
follow the screening of the movie.
