9. Scholarship Opportunity for Southeast Asian High School Seniors

Creating Hope for Future Generations: 30 Scholarships Totaling $40,000
Available to Southeast Asian High School Seniors

A number of people from the local community have come together to administer
a national scholarship fund that will award $40,000 to Minnesota Southeast
Asian high school seniors. The Nisei Student Relocation Commemorative (NSRC)
Fund is offering approximately 30 scholarships between $1,000 and $2,000
each to first- or second-generation Southeast Asian students from Cambodia,
Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, or Vietnam. Candidates must live and attend high
school in Minnesota, plan to graduate from high school or receive their GED
during the 2006-07 academic year, and be accepted to an accredited program
in fall 2007. Accredited programs include vocational and cosmetology
schools, colleges and universities.

The NSRC Fund is a national non-profit organization founded in 1980 by
second-generation Japanese Americans (Nisei) to commemorate the work of the
National Japanese American Student Relocation Council, which assisted the
Nisei students when their college educations were interrupted due to forced
evacuation into U.S. internment camps during World War II. Comprised of
religious, academic and civic leaders, this Council provided administrative
resources and financial support between 1942 and 1946 that enabled nearly
5,000 college-aged Nisei to leave the internment camps to continue their
studies elsewhere.

The Southeast Asian refugee population was selected for assistance because
they shared the Niseiıs experience of war, displacement into camps, and
disruption of education. Minnesota NSRC Fund co-chair Janet Maeda Carlson
explains that the Fund is the modern counterpart to the World War II era
Council whose efforts enabled Nisei to help their community recover from
potentially disastrous, racially motivated wartime injustices. It is not
surprising that the Nisei feel a connection to Southeast Asian students who
also hope and dream that they can improve their familiesı and communitiesı
futures.

Each year, NSRC Fundıs Board of Directors chooses a different U.S. region
with a significant Southeast Asian population and focuses its scholarship
awards in this area. Since 1982, 457 scholarships totaling nearly $400,000
have been awarded to Southeast Asian graduates in 23 cities and regions in
the U.S. In 1987, Minnesota awarded 12 scholarships, totaling $5,000. In
2007, they will once again host the scholarship program, which will be
administered by the Minnesota Chapter of the NSRC Fund. The Twin Cities
Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League is a local sponsoring
organization.

To obtain a scholarship application or to make a tax-deductible donation to
the Minnesota Chapter of the NSRC Fund, visit www.NSRCFund.org or e-mail
MNScholarship2007@hotmail.com.

The scholarship application deadline is March 1, 2007, and an awards
ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, 2007.
