1. Local Human Rights Group and Cafe Partner for Innovative Activism in
Global Campaign
Confronting Gender Violence
Local Human Rights Group and Cafe Partner for Innovative Activism in Global
Campaign
In late November, a local exhibit will give exposure to a human rights abuse
that is as deeply
troubling in Minnesota as it is across the world. The 16 Days Campaign will
begin on November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women, and
end on December 10, International Human Rights Day. The 16 Days Campaign
recognizes that violence against women is a violation of international human
rights. The campaign highlights the local work of advocates, connects local
and global issues, and links activists together to share strategies. The
2007 theme is Demanding Implementation, Challenging Obstacles, End Violence
Against Women! Since its inception in 1991, over 154 countries have
participated in the campaign.
In honor of the 16 Days Campaign, Common Roots Cafe will display photographs
related to the work of the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights. Common
Roots Cafe serves food from scratch using local, organic, and fair-trade
ingredients when possible. In addition to being environmentally
sustainable, it is a place where people gather and actively engage with
their community. The Cafe hosts special events and provides free use of
their Common Room to non-profit and community organizations.

Eiko Otake
The Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota is

The workshop is entitled "Delicious Movement"--there's more info on the
workshop on the website. It will run about an hour and a half. The
workshop is free and open to the public--no dance experience is assumed.
They would like to ask that you let them know if you plan on coming
(www.ias.umn.edu, 612 626-5054). Space is limited to 20 participants. The
workshop is an outgrowth of their brainstorming about the topic for the
University Symposium for next year, which will be on the topic of "Body &
Knowing." It came up more or less on the spur of the moment--Eiko is in
town and available and offered to do the workshop. For more information,

This is an exploration of what it means to be Asian-American women. What do
five creative, restless Asian-American create in a room if given time,
books, pens and paper. Who are we today?
Who have we been? What influence do stereotypes have on Asian-American
women¹s minds? Do stereotypes entrap us? Who would we be if we could
escape the prison of categories in our minds? It is a process using dance,
movement, music and scene work. It is a complete collaboration. And the
questions are still being asked
