2. Meeting on Poverty Commission

Help identify ways to engage your community in visits by the Legislative
Commission to End Poverty:

The Legislative Commission to End Poverty will be visiting local regions and

Options Coalition and the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition are
convening a meeting for those who want to help their communities prepare for
those visits. They will share information about what they understand the
commission hopes to get out of the visits, will brainstorm ways to make
those visits as powerful as possible and will encourage local communities
who have begun their planning to share their ideas.

Lunch will be available. So if you are planning to attend and have not yet
RSVP¹d please let them know. Lunch is thanks to the Joint Religious
Legislative Coalition and they will welcome donations to help them cover the
cost. RSVP at deborah@affirmativeoptions.org.

The Legislative Commission to End Poverty is an officially appointed
commission of 18 legislators and two citizens who are assigned to make
recommendations in December 2008 to the full legislature on what it would
take to end poverty in Minnesota.

3. Inputs Needed for Planning Phase for Asian Pacific Cultural Center (APCC)

Please join the Asian Pacific Cultural Center (APCC) in the planning phase
of the project. APCC is seeking input from present and potential partners
in the community for the design of APCC's facility. They are inviting Asian
organizations and artists to participate in one-on-one meetings on August
16th and August 23rd. Please contact them to set up a time to meet. APCC
is also holding a General Public Information Meeting on Thursday, August
23rd at 5:30pm. Please come and participate in the planning phase for the
Hamm Brewery re-development. They will discuss the vision, design process,
timeline for the project and engage in dialogue with the community.

Let's create the place where we can celebrate, promote and foster
understanding of Asian Pacific cultural heritage serving all Minnesotans.

4. Photography Exhibitions on China this Fall

The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota (link to
www.weisman.umn.edu) is showing Documenting China: Contemporary Photography
and Social Change, which features seven Chinese photographers operating in
new modes of documentary practice to assess their country's transition into
an urbanized, international powerhouse. It is uniquely articulate and the
curator is Gu Zheng and his work in assembling this show is very astute.

And on the heels of the Weisman's exhibition, Minnesota Center for
Photography is thrilled to present Three Gorges, a collection of work about
the Three Gorges Dam project and life along the Yangtze River by Chinese,
European, and North American photographers, including Jeffrey Austin, Steven
Benson, Edward Burtynsky, Linda Butler, James Whitlow Delano, Clark Everett,
Chuck Koosmann, Sze Tsung Leong, Ian Teh, Phyllis Uitti- Maslin, Bill Zorn,
and eleven Chinese photographers whose work has seldom been seen beyond
their own provinces, let alone outside of
China. Several of the photographers will travel to Minnesota to partake in
activities surrounding the exhibition opening on November 17.

The dates:
- Documenting China opens September 8 at the Weisman, and runs through
November 25.
- Three Gorges opens November 17 at MCP, and runs through February 10.

Please note the week of overlap, in case you want to double the
effectiveness of a trip to Minnesota.
