Legends of the East: The show itself has two themes.

The first theme is China's intriguing history that has yielded numerous
heartfelt stories. Four classical dances fall under this theme; however,
these are not customary classical dances. Although derived from poetry,
Peking opera, and popular legend, these pieces are imbued with Western dance
technique, thereby reflecting the purpose of integration and bridging the
gap between East and West. The second theme honors Chinese ethnic groups.
The dances glance into the lifestyles and customs of ethnicities such as
Han, Wa, and Hui.

Regardless of theme, the entire program, an arrangement of Chinese music and
content shaped by Western styles, is constructed to tell a story of Chinese
practices, traditions, and customs through means collectively understood.
The dances are choreographed so that Western audiences can appreciate and
identify the same motifs and sentiments at play in an ancient Chinese love
story as those in Romeo and Juliet. Such an undertaking has never been
attempted by any other Chinese dance group; it is truly a novel and original
Concept in dance.

3. Celebration of 60 Years of India¹s Independence

After the very successful visit of Sam Pitroda they are moving forward
through The Knowledge Exchange to work on next steps there. They need to
move forward on other areas of the Minnesota India Alliance.

August 15th, 2007. They want a planning committee to work for this major
celebration of 60 years of India's Independence. On this day they should
bring together every group or person with an India connection in Minnesota
to celebrate with them. For this to work they need a strong core group of
volunteers and they hope the India Association of Minnesota will take the
lead on this. Perhaps they can connect the energy used to plan their annual
picnic with this larger event.
Just at the U of M at the Pitroda reception there were over 20 different
connections with India. They were amazed. The work they do here will be
very valuable to the new India Center. It could also include the screening
on the new video series on India done by Simone.

6. Exhibit: A Refugee Camp in the Heart of Minneapolis

A Doctors Without Borders Exhibit!

Dates & Time: Thursday, September 27 - Sunday, September 30, 9:00 am - 5:30
pm

Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an independent
international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid
to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made
disasters, or exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries.

A REFUGEE CAMP IN THE HEART OF THE CITY is an outdoor, interactive
educational exhibit made up of the actual structures and materials you would
find in a real refugee camp. The exhibit asks visitors to imagine what it
is like to be one of the world's 33 million refugees or internally displaced
persons forced to leave their homes because of war or conflict. Doctors
Without Borders/MSF aid workers will guide all visitors through the camp,
explaining the elements that are crucial for survival in a refugee crisis
such as shelter, clean water, food, and medical care, and introducing
visitors to the work of MSF. The exhibit is free and wheelchair accessible.

To better accommodate schools and community organizations, they require
groups of 15 or more to pre-register for a reserved time. Groups with more
than 20 participants will be divided into smaller groups. Individuals are
welcome to come to the exhibit without reservations. The exhibit will be
staged in Loring Park in downtown Minneapolis. The tours take up to 60
minutes. Please visit
http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/education/refugeecamp/ to read more
about the 2007 tour and to book groups on-line. The scheduling process will
begin in August. MSF will do their best to accommodate all requests but due
to time/space constraints, scheduling is on a first come, first served
basis.

If you need to reach MSF regarding this tour, please email them at
refugeecampgroups@newyork.msf.org
