Getting Some Perspective on Immigration!

conference agenda is available online at
www.hhh.umn.edu/centers/cspg/events.html.
³Getting Some Perspective on Immigration² will provide a context to the
immigration debate by exploring immigration myths, including the myth that
the United States’ immigration challenge is unique, or that America has
always been a nation welcoming of immigrants. The conference will also look
at myths that dominate the discussion in Minnesota and at the local level.
Facilitated break-out sessions will build on the contextual information and
allow conference participants to articulate a set of common goals or values
that should undergird immigration policy. These observations and
recommendations will then be presented to a panel of state and local
policymakers.

I. An Untold Triumph
Director: Noel Izon
Narrated by Lou Diamond Phillips
(2005) 55 minutes, documentary
Silver Telly Award
24th Annual Competition
Audience award: Best documentary
Hawaiian International Film Festival
During World War II, 7,000 Filipi no Americans volunteered their services to
the U.S. Army and helped liberate their homeland from Japanese occupati on.
Director Noel M. Izon captures their stories through the voices of the
veterans themselves - - only half of whom are still alive today - - and
delivers touching personal accounts of the men's contri but i ons and
sacrifices during the war. Despite the fact that they endured a bleak,
racist prewar climate and were not even considered U.S. citizens, these
individuals rallied to join the war effort and cement their rightful place
in American history.
II. Grassroots Rising
(2005) 56 minutes, documentary
Grassroots Rising tells the powerful stories of Asian immigrant workers and
the moving struggles they face in the fight to improve their working
conditions. Grassroots Rising shows that community based organizations like
the Pilipino Worker Center are part of a growing Pan- Asian movement to
create a multi ethnic coalition, collaborating to improve the lives of all
workers.

Group of Minnesota (PSGM). For more information, call: Pieter Sibal
