2. Giant Robot at the Walker
Since its humble beginnings as a stapled-and-folded digest in 1994, Giant
Robot magazine has grown into a full-color authority on Asian,
Asian-American, and hybrid popular culture. Subjects range from new art,
up-and-coming design, and alternative cinema to unusual travel, unheard
music, and obscure history. The Los Angeles publication¹s atypical subject
matter, unpredictable angles, and honest tone have earned a hardcore
readership around the world. Success has not been limited to newsstands and
coffee tables. Giant Robot has become a bona-de brand, with a line of art
books and retail stores in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City.
On Thursday, October 5, Eric Nakamura and Martin Wong, the editors/ creators
of Giant Robot, will give a free talk at the Walker Art Center¹s William and
Nadine McGuire Theater in Minneapolis. Topics will include but are not
limited to the evolution of Giant Robot and the events and directions of
Asian and Asian-American popular culture that have been detailed in the
magazine¹s first 12 years. They don¹t visit Minnesota very often, and hope
to see you there.

Drive, St. Paul, MN 55108
With growing emphasis on our national security, gang violence has taken a
back seat to terrorism. However, looking at the continued violence
throughout the State of Minnesota, it is apparent that gangs have not gone
away. On the contrary, as police and community pressure has let down on
gangs, they have gained strength and now we are seeing a step-up with
increased violence to take control of the drug trade and increase their
membership. The structure of a gang attracts survival-oriented youth who
lack pro-social bonds with family and/or the local community. Young gang
recruits reflect the entire range of cultural, racial, and socio-economic
populations. This has become everyone's problem, as no community is
unaffected.
Participants in this seminar will gain insight on the current structure,
culture, activities, and driving forces behind the gangs operating in our
area. You will also learn about the motivation leading to gang affiliation
and what professionals, as well as parents, can do to provide youth with
alternative choices and leadership possibilities. Please join them to learn
how we can work together to cope with, and eventually, get ahead of this
problem
Sponsored by: The Minnesota Chapter of the Midwest Gang Investigator's
Association United With The Minnesota State Gang Strike Force, The
Minneapolis Police Department, The St. Paul Police Department, The 3M
Foundation, and Metropolitan State University School of Law Enforcement &
Criminal Justice
