3. Yinghua Academy Opening Fall 2006
3Yinghua Academy
A New Chinese Focused Charter Public School
Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
Opening Fall 2006
What is the Mission of Yinghua Academy?
The mission of Yinghua Academy is to provide a challenging and comprehensive
learning environment that will nurture students' natural inquisitiveness and
will prepare them to be engaged and productive global citizens.
Students will develop intellectual curiosity and critical-thinking skills as
well as broad and deep knowledge in language arts, mathematics, world and
American history and culture, science, and fine arts.
Yinghua Academy will be bilingual and bicultural. During the 2006-2007
school year Yinghua Academy will provide immersion in Mandarin Chinese in K
and 1st grade and a significant introduction to Mandarin Chinese in 2nd and
3rd grades as well as Chinese cultural experiences in all grades.
What is Immersion Education?
Immersion education is an approach to teaching language where the majority
of subject content is taught in the second language. Studies show that
immersion education students outperform students in traditional language
classes, do as well or better than non-immersion students on standardized
tests, and have a greater appreciation of cultural diversity. After
investigating several options in language instruction the Yinghua Academy
Board of Directors decided that immersion education would provide children
with the level of Chinese competency that they desire.
Is Yinghua Academy a Public School?
Yes, Yinghua Academy is a public school and is tuition-free to all students.
Yinghua Academy is a charter public school. It is part of Minnesota's
public school system, but operates independently from the school district in
which the school will be physically located. They receive state and federal
funding based on the number of students who attend the school.
Who is on the Board of Directors of Yinghua Academy?
The Board of Yinghua Academy is made up of parents, educators, and community
members who understand the importance of Mandarin Chinese Language
instruction in an ever increasing global economy. Their Board is made up of
the following members: Cindy Moeller, Chair; Danling Cai;
Zhining Chin; Laura Harris; Doug Parish; Kristina Schatz; Michael VanKeulen;
Margaret Wong; Jennifer Yan; and Larry Yan.
Where will Yinghua Academy be located?
